12 Oven Cleaning Hacks That Actually Work.

Some are pub-quiz famous. Some you've never heard of. All of them have been tested in 400+ West London kitchens by an owner-operated detailer.

  1. 1

Dishwasher tablet on the door glass

Wet a dishwasher tablet under the tap and rub it directly onto the inside of cold oven glass in small circles. The enzymes lift baked-on grease in under two minutes — wipe clean with a damp microfibre. Works on shower screens too.

  2. 2

    Bin-bag the racks overnight

Lay racks flat in a black bin bag, pour in a cup of biological washing powder and enough hot water to submerge, knot it, and leave in the bath overnight. In the morning the grime rinses off under the tap — no scrubbing.

  3. 3

    The credit-card scraper

An old plastic card is the safest tool for lifting carbon off enamel. Metal scourers scratch the coating, which then traps grease and rusts. Plastic flexes and pops residue off without damaging the surface.

  4. 4

    Steam first, scrub second

Heat a tray of water to 120 °C for 20 minutes before you start. The steam softens carbon so every later step takes half the elbow grease. This single trick is the biggest time-saver pros use on light cleans.

  5. 5

Baking soda + vinegar — but in the right order

Spread baking soda paste first, leave it 8 hours, then spray vinegar on top to fizz off the residue. Mixing them upfront just makes salty water — the chemistry only works in sequence.

  6. 6

    Lemon halves for weekly maintenance

Squeeze two lemons into an oven-safe dish of water, drop the rinds in, and bake at 120 °C for 30 minutes once a fortnight. The citric-acid steam stops grease ever building up — so deep cleans become rare.

  7. 7

    Cling film on vertical surfaces

Paste on the oven roof slides off before it can work. Smear baking-soda paste on, then press cling film over it. The paste stays put for the full overnight reaction.

  8. 8

    Toothpaste on stainless trim

A pea of white (not gel) toothpaste on a damp cloth polishes scratches out of the stainless trim and handle. Buff with a dry microfibre after.

  9. 9

Pillowcase the racks for the dishwasher

If racks fit your dishwasher, pop each into an old pillowcase first. It stops them rattling against the spray arm and damaging both the rack and the machine. Run the longest cycle.

  10. 10

    Hairdryer for the seal

Warm the door seal with a hairdryer on low for 30 seconds before wiping. The rubber relaxes, releasing grease that would otherwise stay stuck — and no harsh chemicals needed.

  11. 11

    Aluminium foil under the bottom

A loose sheet of foil on the oven floor (not on the heating element) catches spills before they bake on. Replace every fortnight. Saves the next deep-clean almost entirely.

  12. 12

    Don't forget the extractor filter

Pop the metal mesh filter out of your hood and soak in a sink of hot water + bicarb + washing-up liquid for 20 minutes. A clogged filter is the single biggest reason your kitchen smells of cooking the next day.

Beyond DIY

When the hacks aren't enough.

Once carbon is older than 12 months it bonds to the enamel and household chemistry can't shift it. That's where the van-mounted dip-tank earns its keep. Fixed prices from £65 — same-day cooking guaranteed.
