No caustic fumes. No harsh chemicals. Just baking soda, white vinegar and lemon — the same household staples that power our zero-caustic detailing service across West London.

Why clean your oven naturally?

Commercial oven cleaners rely on sodium hydroxide — caustic soda — to burn off carbon. It works, but the fumes linger for hours, can trigger asthma, and are unsafe around pets and children. Pyrolytic (self-clean) cycles hit 500 °C and stress door seals and control boards over time.

Natural methods use pH chemistry instead: alkaline baking soda loosens grease, acidic vinegar dissolves mineral deposits, and lemon oil cuts through lingering fat. The result is a clean cavity you can cook in the same evening — no aftertaste, no venting, no rubber gloves needed.

Syon ethos

Our van-mounted dip-tank uses the same principle — EU Ecolabel-certified, biodegradable in 28 days, and rated safer than standard washing-up liquid. Natural chemistry, just done with professional heat, pressure and tooling.

What you'll need

  • Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) — 200g
  • White vinegar (distilled malt) — 250ml
  • Fresh lemons — 2 to 3
  • A clean spray bottle
  • Microfibre cloths — 3 or 4
  • A plastic spatula or old credit card
  • Washing-up liquid
  • A large bowl or sink for racks

The overnight baking-soda paste

This is the heavy-lift method. The paste does the work while you sleep, so all you do in the morning is wipe and rinse.

  1. 1

    Remove racks, trays and shelves

Take everything out and set aside. Remove the fan cover if it pops off easily — if not, leave it for now.

  2. 2

    Mix the paste

Combine 150g bicarbonate of soda with 3–4 tablespoons of warm water in a small bowl. Aim for the consistency of thick toothpaste — spreadable, but not runny.

  3. 3

    Spread generously

Wearing a household glove if you prefer, smear the paste over every interior surface: roof, floor, back wall and door. Avoid the heating element and any exposed wiring.

  4. 4

    Leave overnight

Close the door and leave the paste to work for 8–12 hours. The alkaline soda reacts with carbonised grease, lifting it from the enamel.

  5. 5

    Wipe and rinse

In the morning, use a damp microfibre cloth to wipe out the paste. Stubborn spots? Spray white vinegar onto the residue — it will fizz and dissolve instantly. Wipe again with clean water and dry with a fresh cloth.

The vinegar-spray boost

White vinegar is your finisher. Its acetic acid cuts through the alkaline film baking soda leaves behind and dissolves limescale and mineral deposits from hard water.

  1. 1

    Fill the spray bottle

Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water. For very greasy ovens, use vinegar neat.

  2. 2

    Spray every surface

Coat the interior roof, walls, floor and door. Pay extra attention to the door seal groove — it's where fat pools.

  3. 3

    Wait 15 minutes

The acid needs time to react. Don't rush this step — make a cup of tea.

  4. 4

    Wipe and dry

Use a clean microfibre cloth to wipe away dissolved residue. Follow with a water-dampened cloth to remove any vinegar smell, then dry thoroughly.

The lemon steam refresh

This is the light-touch maintenance clean — ideal every 4–6 weeks to stop grease building up in the first place. The citric acid and essential oils in lemon cut through fat and leave a fresh, clean scent.

  1. 1

    Slice two lemons

Cut them into quarters and place them in an oven-safe dish filled with water.

  2. 2

    Heat to 120 °C

Place the dish on the middle rack and heat the oven for 30 minutes. The steam loosens surface grease.

  3. 3

    Cool and wipe

Turn the oven off, leave the door closed for another 15 minutes, then open and wipe every surface with a damp cloth. The grease should lift easily.

Cleaning door glass, racks & trays

The glass and metalwork are where amateur cleans usually fall short. Grease bakes onto racks at high heat, and door glass is two panes with a narrow air gap — smears inside are almost impossible to reach without splitting the door.

Racks and trays

Lay them in a bath or large tray, sprinkle generously with baking soda, then pour white vinegar over the top. Leave for 2 hours, then scrub with a non-scratch pad and rinse. For badly caked racks, soak overnight in a 50:50 mix of warm water and washing-up liquid.

Door glass

Wipe the exterior with a vinegar-dampened cloth. For the interior, spray vinegar onto the glass and leave for 10 minutes before wiping. If there are smears between the glass panes, most oven doors can be split with a screwdriver — but check your manual first. If in doubt, leave it: forcing clips can crack the glass.

Seals, hinges and the fan cover

Rubber seals absorb grease and degrade if cleaned with caustic chemicals. Use only warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid and a soft cloth. Wipe gently — never pull or scrub aggressively, as this can deform the seal and let heat escape.

The fan cover clips into place on most models. If it pops off easily, soak it in hot soapy water for 30 minutes, then wipe clean. If it is screwed in, leave it — stripping threads in a fan housing is an expensive repair.

When to call a professional

Natural methods work brilliantly for maintenance and light-to-moderate build-up. But if your oven hasn't been cleaned in over a year, or carbon is baked onto the roof and fan blades, household chemistry simply isn't strong enough — and that's by design. The whole point is avoiding the harsh agents that damage enamel and seals.

A professional detailer uses heated dip-tanks, enzymatic degreasers and tooling that reaches behind the fan and between the door glass — safely, without voiding warranties or cracking seals.
